Why I charge more for Steam Wallet Codes sold in Bitcoin than they are worth in USD - A peek into the risks of giftcard sales
I just stumbled across a thread from 2 weeks that complained about people charging more when they accept BTC than for when they take cash. My business has some difficult hurdles to deal with, so I wanted to explain how things work. I'm open to any optimization suggestions. I run SteamLoader.com, a site that sells Steam Wallet Codes for Bitcoin. First of all, I don't use BitPay or Coinbase. I'm a bitcoin purist and try to keep my profits and operating capital in Bitcoin. This introduces the first set of problems, but I believe that it's a moral decision. I have tried to partner with a gift-card clearing house that has an API to fulfill orders, but the market isn't friendly to small players like me. They demanded a $25,000 USD non-refundable setup fee, no promise that Steam would even work with me, and assurances that I wouldn't sell to international users anymore. I can't abide by those terms. Because of that, I have to employ a mix of methods to buy wallet codes. One supplier is a wholesale game-supplier that typically sells to video game stores and sells cards to me for 3% off face value. Another is a game supplier that sells me Zeevex cards in large denominations that I convert to Steam wallet codes. The wholesale game-supplier only accepts bank wire transfers. If I want $2000 of cards, I'll sell 2.334 BTC ($831 a BTC at this moments exchange rate) and transfer the money to my bank account and then transfer it to my supplier. This whole process takes 4 days. Then I get the cards and put them in inventory. It could take 3 days to sell them. If I sold cards for the face value, and the price of BTC goes over 855 between the 4th and 7th day when the cards are on sale, then I'll lose money. As we all know, bitcoin is very volatile and often swings large amounts. The game supplier that sells me the Zeevex cards does result in being able to fill inventory more quickly because I can use paypal and that shaves off 2 days, but the process is a lot more tedious. You go through 5 webpages to order a gift card and you can't do it in bulk. Try repeating that 300 times a day. Plus, there isn't much of a discount. Another reason prices are higher is that I like rounded mBTC numbers as my prices. If I sold a $5 card for 6mBTC, I would get less than the face value ($4.99 at this moments exchange rate). At 7mBTC, it's $5.82 and that's not enough safety net. At 8mbtc it's $6.64. A $100 card only costs 5% over face value compared to a $5 card that might end up costing 20% over face value. This buffer has protected me against bitcoin price swings but it has also allowed me to pay off a BTCJam loan I used to start out and to also build enough operating capital that I now can keep $3k in inventory, while $6k of money is tied up, constantly in transit between banks. It has also allowed me to build up enough capital so that I can start offering new services in the coming months. XBox Live sales are coming later next week. Once I build enough capital to keep an inventory, I'll move onto Netflix, Hulu, Playstation, iTunes, and Google Play. So, with all of that information, what is your opinion of my pricing practices? If you disagree, do you have any suggestions that would work for a boot-strapped company like mine? Any ideas on efficiency improvements? Edit: After some thought, I've changed the pricing formula. Basically, I add 5% and then round UP to the nearest mBTC just because it looks prettier. Before it was 6% and I rounded up and then added 1 mBTC to encourage larger denomination card purchases. At this moments exchange rate, now the markup is equivalent to:
