A story from a cloaky camper and an attempt to build a beast mode multi-boxing server.

21/04/2018
Hello Nerds!

Some of you may know me, some may not. Those that do will know I offer cloaky camping services over new eden. I do camping contracts / extort renters and focus my time hunting botters when the contracts are quiet. I offer PvP entities access to my cyno network to get dank kills and big escalations. From super carriers to Rattlesnakes.

The thing that got me into camping was hunting bots back in the dronelands a few years ago. I realised the most effective way to hurt them was to camp them 23/7, follow them around using locator agents. Eventually they had to rat with me in system. When they did I setup bubble traps etc and dropped blops and cleaned them up.

The 2nd thing I love about cloaky camping is the ability to counter Alliances (i feel its overpowered) intel channels / networks. Think about it. They have multiple intel toons dotted around the entrances to their pipes reporting hunters coming into the pipe allowing the PvE players to warp off and safe up. They even use external programs to collect this intel and give audible alerts. Cloaky camping is just the polar opposite. Dotting toons in their ratting pocket and giving me intel on whats going on in their system. As long as local chat exists so will cloaky camping. I'm pretty confident CCP share the same thought.

People probably think cloaky camping is easy. You are wrong. The prep work and behind the scenes work that goes into it is pretty immense. You are about to find out.

The hardware i'm currently running the 60 clients on is as follows:

Camper1: Screenshot of 30 Clients Layout
Camper2:

How do you pay for 60 toons
I started with 10 campers and made ISK by other means. When I made new campers I invested ISK and started to Skill extract and plexing the toons. I also make a decent amount from people who pay me to camp others.

The Setup
I manage the clients window positions and CPU allocation with ISBOXER. Its legal to use as long as you don't use input broadcasting. I boot up the clients with ISBOXER EVE Launcher. I copy the window positions / chat channels etc over using garpaui. I use remote desktop to manage the clients light cynos etc.
Example here

On both motherboards I had to under clock the processors as they were drawing too much power from the motherboard and causing the chipset to overheat. I think these motherboards are not beefy enough to support these 8 core processors. It caused the CPU to throttle reducing the clock speeds to 1.3Ghz and causing lag issues. I solved this problem by reducing the clock speed from 4Ghz to 3.6Ghz and reducing the CPU voltage. This reduced the heat by a really good amount and stopped the problems.

However, Me being me I wanted to expand and the camping pcs were running at full chat. So I needed a better piece of hardware to host these 60+ clients. So, while at Fanfest, I bidded on this R820 Server on ebay and won!

Specs:

The hardware should be able to support multiple clients. However i'm not too sure how eve is going to behave when I try and open 60 instances all in one OS. I have set myself up for a hell of a challenge! However, I feel like I got a pretty good deal on the server and DELL hold their value. I'm sure I can re sell it if the project fails.

Things to work out:

Things I will teach you guys

I'm learning too so your help input would be awesome! First question. Shall I just update this reddit post each time or create some sort of blog?
Old AMD FX Rigs
New Kit / with various bits I gathered to get started

Update 23/04/18
I have made some decent progress on this crazy project. I will give some breif updates here. I will get a blog up and running to post full details with how to's etc. Its probably way to long for reddit.

I have successfully installed some GPU's into the R810 AMD R9 280x and Nvidia GTX 970. I soldered some PCI-E cables to the PDB and it worked fine. The GTX sits nicely in the chassis however, the R9 280X is external atm using a PCIE x1 to x16 riser (from my bitcoin mining). Also I have managed to enable and use them both with passthrough in ESXI 6.5. Yes the GPU works with a x1 adaptor. WTF!

Freezing Problem with a single os install
If I try and run more than 40 clients in a single OS I the system freezes when loading up client 41. I have tried the following:
I cannot see why it is freezing. Is there any way to gather logs for the client? It doesn't appear to be a resource problem. Plenty of RAM / CPU and HDD isn't going crazy.

Here are some pics of the current progress:

[META]Whats the best used GPU for $250?

I have my Radeon 7870, but really want something better, still in the AMD line though, looking at the Radeon 79xx, and R9 280X lines. Wondering what I can expect to pay for any of these used?

[USA-IN][H] Sapphire R9 280x, GTX 660 2gb, iPhone 5s [W] Paypal

Edit: Repost
Edit: 280x sold to LactosBear
Edit: GTX 660 sold to Vexedly_
Edit: GTX 660 is available
Hey everyone! Just trying to sell off some of my old hardware I had laying around.
I have a Sapphire R9 280x Vabor-X. This model is pretty much the Bee's knees of the 280x's. Full disclosure! I mined on this card for about a month way back in the days of Bitcoin and Litecoin mining. However, the card still runs super cool and stable. Has fresh paste on the card and runs at 45-50C when gaming! This card still rocks at 1080p gaming and does't mine crypto currency all that well which keeps the price down :D I'm asking $130 shipped.
I also have a EVGA GTX 660 2gb. Has fresh paste on it and runs super cool. A great budget card for 1080p gaming. I'm asking $55 shipped.
Finally I have an iPhone 5s up for sale. It's a 16gb AT&T model. It is slightly bent(as pictured) but still works great! According to my girlfriend it is unlocked. She just happened to have an AT&T contract with the phone. I'm asking $90 shipped OBO.

Advice? Going a bit insane.

I have a simple set-up I've been trying to get running stable for about a week now. I have 2x nVIDIA GTX 980 and 2x Radeon 29 280X cards that I want to use.
I have previously used just the GTX 980s and they were stable for weeks. I recently acquired the 280s, and while I can't be certain, I think the cards are not at issue.
I also had two of the 980s and one 280 running in my desktop stable for quite some time, just as a tester. But for the actual mining rig, I was using old AMD AM3-based hardware. And I've had nothing but problems. Murphy's law.
First, I had a motherboard go out (ASUS M4A87TD EVO.) Luckily I had a spare. But the ASUS board had two native PCI-E x16 slots (one running at x1 speed,) and so I had been running the 980s both in the motherboard, and was using this riser extender to run the other cards, with molex->SATA risers (I don't have enough native 4-pin connectors to run without molex to SATA adapters.)
The "new" board (which is actually chronologically older and older tech) is a Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H. It's also socket AM3 but only supports DDR2 memory; luckily I had old DDR2 available. This board also only has one x16 slot, so I am running 3 GPUs outside of the chassis with x16 risers.
It turns out after some nightmare of troubleshooting that one of the DDR2 DIMMs is probably bad. I don't have a replacement at the moment, but I've tried running everything with one DIMM.
I also have Virtual Memory (swap/page file) set to 16GB. I don't know why this is necessary, but other people mention it and NiceHash wouldn't let me run 4 cards without it.
Anyway, all works "fine;" I have the 280s set to 850MHz core clock and +20 power with 100% fans, and 100% fans and native clock on the 980s.
But I keep getting crashes. Before I had freezes, so I also changed out power supplies several times and tried everything you can think of. I don't think the issue is down to power any more, but I'm open to correction if anyone has a suggestion or tip.
For power, I'm using a 3 to 1 ATX-24 pin adapter, with a SeaSonic 620W as the master, and a Corsair 550W as the "slave." The SeaSonic powers the motherboard and the ATX12V for the CPU. It also powers the 3 SATA to molex adapters for the x16 risers, and the 8+6 pin PCI-E power connectors for the 280s.
The Corsair powers the HDD (this I have also suspected of causing problems but I have swapped HDDs and had the same issues, and I really need to get an SSD for this thing,) two 120mm intake fans, two 140mm exhaust fans, and the 6 pin PCI-E connectors for the 980s.
It doesn't seem to freeze anymore. It will mine just fine for a while but eventually I will get a BSOD, usually saying that the device driver has gone into an infinite loop. I believe this is the Crimson driver (I am using version 15.12.)
I've swapped CPUs and memory and HDDs and motherboards and I'm just almost at my wits' end about to tear my hair out trying to get this thing to run stably. I most likely just need to get all new mainboard/CPU/memory, but I can't do that at the moment, so I am looking for any advice/help I can get.
I would assume the driver is going into an infinite loop because it's polling hardware and not getting the response it expects or something like that, which could indicate a power or heat issue, but I don't know. And I've searched for the BSOD error and 90% of the results for "device driver went into an infinite loop" (paraphrasing) were related to AMD Crimson drivers. So that's been where my suspicion has been so far, and I've had other problems with getting the AMD stuff to work when I was initially setting it up. (And had problems with AMD/ATi drivers going back 20 years, ugh.)
So.. Any advice?
TL;DR: Running 2x GTX 980 and 2x R9 280X; keep getting BSOD about device driver going into an infinite loop after some time mining. Want to stab myself.

Made $1 Million mining. Want to Cash out. worried about being unemployed

Basically back in early 2016, I bought some second hand Radeon 7970s and r9 280x and been mining ETH since it pretty much launched. Back then you basically made like 1 ETH per GPU per day. Back then a 280x mined at like 27MH/s since the DAG was very small. Even my R9 270X mined at like 20MH/s.
I kept all this ETH, along with the free ETC, sold all of my ETH/ETC when it peaked at $400 last Summer and went all in BTC. BTC went 5x since that time. Also got the free bitcoin forks.
I kept cashing out a small amount with bitcoin ATMs and basically quit my job since it wasn't worth the hassle.
Now I want to buy a house but I am worried about sending $1,000,000 to an exchange like Gemini/Coinbase/Kraken/Bitstamp and have them freeze this BTC.
I am worried they will ask for employment papers and I've been unemployed since 2016.
All this money was made legally. However since I mined to an exchange instead of my personal ETH wallet, I might not be able to provide a signed message proving I am the one who mined those coins. Since all the coins were mined directly to my Poloniex account. I do have receipts for some RX 470s that I bought last year and wondering if its sufficent. Do I need to take photos of my mining rigs and show it to my exchange as proof?
I know I can buy USDT tether but I am worried that its not really backed by anything. I also don't know if any of the Bitcoin Future Options will be sufficient since they might carry crazy premiums for the puts.
Wondering if people had issues withdrawing large amounts.

Looking to set up a node on a raspberry pi, have some questions

Hey all, I'd like to get back into bitcoin, but since my pc hardware (280x) isn't up to spec anymore, I'd like to try another angle. So I'd like to put together a node to verify transactions with a raspberry pi2 I have not doing much. So my questions are:
Where should I store the data on? I've got a 16Gb card right now, but I also have a 128Gb flash drive plugged into it, pretty much empty. Should I even use flash storage?
How much traffic would it use? I have an 85MBps connection, but I'd like to not consume tons of bandwidth.
Would I have any problems with security? I know I'd have to forward a port, and I'd likely use fail2ban on it, I'd just like to keep as many people from poking at it as possible.
I found a coupe of guides, but is there a method you would recommend?
Thanks guys!

Is Dogecoin mining profitable? No.

I love Dogecoin, and I love the dogecoin community. So I thought I'd take a moment to look at whether it's worth buying mining hardware to get Dogecoin, or just buying Dogecoin itself.
I had another redditor give me some figures to go off of, so I ran the numbers on Coinwarz and this is what I got:
A 280x costs $440 right now on Amazon.
I'm going to assume for the purposes of this calculation that no other hardware would be required other than the card. If someone else can give me an estimate for the accessories, please do.
We're getting 700 KH/s with power consumption of 260W, and electricity prices of $0.10 per KW/hour (the US average right now).
I'm using the coinwarz calculator to determine revenue (I set the equipment cost to $0): http://www.coinwarz.com/calculators/dogecoin-mining-calculato
Where people get tripped up is that they don't account for the difficulty increase. So what I've done is look at the Dogecoin and Bitcoin difficulty increase over the past month, and done a week by week look at the returns, assuming the same weekly difficulty increase as each currency had.
Dogecoin's difficulty went from 472 to 1385. That's a 193% increase in a month. Bitcoin's difficulty went from 1180-2193, an 85% increase.
Assuming a 193% increase, the difficulty will rise to 4058 by the end of the month.
To calculate the difficulty for a week, we use the average difficulty between the beginning and end of the week. The difficulty goes up 664 a week, so we take half of that and that's where we start the first week: (since the week starts at 1385 and ends at 2049, we add a half week's increase to get the average of 1717.
Week one - 1717 Difficulty: $55 Week two - 2381 Difficulty: $39 Week three - 3045 Difficulty: $29
Now i'm being generous because the reward halves in 18 days, but i'm pretending it lasts 3 weeks.
Week four - 3709 Difficulty: $10
Added together, you make $133 your first month. At the end of month difficulty (4058) You'd make $8.27 per week, or 38 weeks (or 9.5 months) to break even. And that's assuming the difficulty stays the same after one month.
Now, running the numbers assuming the 85% increase that bitcoin experienced:
week 1 - 1532: $62.60 Week 2 - 1826: $51.82 Week 3 - 2120: $44.02 the mining reward drops by 50%: Week 4 - 2561: $16.88 = $175.32
Assuming the same difficulty as the end of week four (2562) in perpetuity, it would take you 17 Weeks (4.3 months) to make back your initial investment. And that's assuming the difficulty stays the same, which it won't.
And if you're going to assert that "well, that's based on the fact that the price will stay the same, but part of the reason you mine is cause the price might go up!"
Yes, the price might go up, but you'd make the same amount of money buying $450 Dogecoins. The question is not "are Dogecoins a good investment?" It's "is mining Dogecoins a better investment than just buying them?"
TLDR; buying new hardware to mine Dogecoins is a bad investment when you take into account the rise in Difficulty.

[SCAMMER ALERT] yyhaoyue1

Hello fellow Verters, I just wanted to give you guys a heads up. I was scammed by user yyhaoyue1, and I don't want any of my Vert brethren to fall victim as well. Please pass things along, I'm now out $300, that was going to pay for family bills and I feel awful :(
Here is the blockchain info he ran the scam through, and probably others! https://blockchain.info/address/18P8FvYYuE2V6vdPrVGT8hiNt3NnLXQu6t?sort=1

Forged a Coinguard.org email. I sent the 280x to the address, and they responded with a "haha thanks for the 280x". Now I'm out of $300 :( I hope others have not fallen victim to this person. This package was sent Priority USPS , and was signed for by "H Yong".

My Consulting Rate Schedule / Experience - If you want serious work done or advice that would take me hours to explain

My background:
My Rates - I'll scale by age, makes sense to me
Note: If I don't like you, for whatever reason at this point, there is a 10 Eth / Hour Asshole surcharge These prices are completely arbitrary, pay them , don't pay them, I don't care. Going forward, if anyone PMs me in regards to help , they will just get a link to this post. Pretty much wrote all of this up to save myself time from 100 PMs a day from ungrateful people at /EtherMining
What you get: * 1 hr phone and / or video conference call. * Ask me how my day was, ask me technical question - your choice * 15m free phone / video call follow up * I am a reasonable guy, if I projected an issue to be done in x hours and it's not fixed by that time, I'll stay on the line until it is
You can pay me for my time & experience or you can spend 500 messing around with your own rigs yourself (Like I did) - It is completely your choice. This is more of an option for people who have extra crash and don't have time time to put in like I did.

Cheers,

-Epic™

Edit: Just if you can't Math ( as lots of people can't - no big deal ) EVERY 1/mhs you LOSE because your rig is not optimized Equates to .5 Eth / Month LOSS. Do the math on what you are losing. Here - 20/mhs loss = 10 Eth / Month * $8.25 ( Current Rate ) = $82.5. If Eth goes to $20 that is $200 per month on coins you lost ONLY because you did not apply the right settings for your cards. This should make my "fee" look cheap in comparison if you're running multiple cards. And if Eth goes to $1,000 in a few years like Bitcoin did, you will have some serious regrets.
PM: Pro Bono Consulting Client:
"My rates peak as high as 128MH/s.. so my average will probably be in the 115MH/s range. When I try the local/global-work code and/or setting the allocation percentage higher than 95%, I get errors. Can't remember what specifically.. something about failing to grab DAG info in one big chunk and 'bailing'."
PM: Pro Bono Consulting Client:
"Hey thank you for the help on etherminer. I finally got the 6-GPU rig up and running. Windows turned out to be more of a headache than Ubuntu so I went back to Linux and figured it out. As per your suggestion I am on ethermine.org using qtminer. (I'm actually offline at the moment, but everything is operational) I used the default qtminer code that tells all of the GPUs to work but it's not entirely clear what is happening. Each GPU appears to be working on the same 'problem'. Is that accurate? As opposed to having each GPU work more independently on a separate problem..? I set the GPU workload to 93%.. Fans to 90%.. everything running cool at ~50c The results of most of the mining calculations appear to get grouped and uploaded to the pool as some sort of 'piece of the puzzle'. Every so often there is a 'solution' with a 'nonce'. How does that relate to getting an ETH reward? Also, how does the affect getting paid so long as the same address is used? I referenced a tutorial and accidentally used .rig1 to initialize qtminer - instead of the name of my computer (I still used my wallet address). I don't understand how all of this impacts getting paid or what my options are for tweaking the configuration. I'll sort it out either way but any additional insight is appreciated. ..single Ether sent as a token of gratitude... https://etherscan.io/tx/0x9782d0cfb5f98cf086e879cc510fd45968aef3a9798ee4281b475bc569eb5c11 (Tx ID was posted) Cheers"
PM: Corporate Client: This is a real PM I received and the type of PM I will respond to if you want to work with me -
"Dear EpicEther, My name is [Real First AND Last name] and i live and study in the [Country] ( Public administration and Philosophy at [School Name] University. Me and four partners are setting up a mining company after building a succesfull mining rig containing 5 r9 280x cards. At the moment we have potential investors and a brochure containing information about ethereum and different mining set-up's with estimated costs for the inestors. I would really like to have a conversation with a veteran in the mining world and woud like to discus the following questions. - Is investing in more expensive GPU's worth it since mining will be faced out in the coming year. - How can we help to grow the ethereum network Kind regards, [Real Full Name]"

These are the type of PMs I get on a daily basis and 100% can help you with within an hours time.

Scrypt-N, what is it?

OK, so I started mining Bitcoin with 336Mh/s USB ASICs back when they were $10/each. By the time January hit they were useless, although they still generate about $7/week.
Then I bought an overpriced R9 280x and have been making a decent return every week. Now I'm seeing hashing speeds drop and on /litecoinmining I see posts about how there are scrypt ASICs coming.
I was really disappointed to hear this as I thought (and have argued this with friends) that Scrypt coining has been generally safer because to get high hash rates we all have to buy the same type of hardware, video cards, which usually only do 1 or 2 generation bumps a year, and those bumps don't always come with huge performance increase.
I also saw a few comments about Scrypt-N coins (panda, quark, etc.) How do these hashing algorithms differ from Scrypt coins (litecoin, feathercoin, doge, etc.)? Are they truly safe from ASICs? Should I switch to mining Scrypt-N coins now, and if so, which coins would be recommended?
I don't want to switch to a coin that's just going to be a pump and dump as I don't believe they truly help the community.
